The station computer is a VME computer. This computer was selected for several reasons: compatibility with European stations and the ability to easily upgrade cards, the CPU, and the operating system.

A note of interest: NASA uses the VME system for the Mars Rovers, the CPU for them is a PowerPC, similar to ones found in the Apple Macintosh computer.
