The Array Side

The array operator sits at this console and keeps an eye on what is happening at each VLBA site. The antennas are pointed at the source to be observed via a computer program transmitted to each site over the Internet or a phone modem. During an observation "monitor data" is transmitted back to this console. The data is decoded and displayed on these monitors, keeping the operator informed about such things as current problems with equipment temperatures and pressure readings, current weather at each antenna, the local time at each antenna (the VLBA spans seven time zones), and other status information. The operator also keeps in touch with the technicians at each site to discuss problems with the system or changes in the schedules.
